In Light of Brian Powell’s death, I figured I’d check in on the rest of the band (Lynyrd Skynyrd) to see what their reactions were. Here’s a part of a recent blog post by Artimus Pyle, from Lynyrd Skynyrd.

    Artimus here,

It’s 6:24 Thursday October 18th, 2007.  As you all know, I never go online.  But, Saturday is a very strange anniversary.  We lost Ronnie, Steve, Cassie, Dean, and our pilot and co-pilot, Walter McCreary and John Gray.  So for our friends Leon and Allen, we remember the plane crash.  Thank you all for keeping the music alive all these years.  The radio stations, movie sound tracks, television, and now even KFC commercials, keep the music in our hearts every day.  It’s amazing…….I am proud to be included in this great music.  And thanks so much for your votes in the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame.

Artimus Pyle, drummer RVZ’s Rock and Roll Hall of Fame, Lynyrd Skynyrd

The impact of Lynyrd Skynyrd on American rock and roll began with the harmonious blend of guitar driven rock with southern blues roots and can be heard today in the new rock music of the 21st Century. Artimus Pyle’s powerful and distinctive double bass drumming helped define the legendary Skynyrd sound. Artimus’ live debut with the band took place in Jacksonville’s Sgt Pepper’s Club in October 1974.  The years Artimus played with Skynyrd were the years that solidified the legend behind the band with classic rock songs such as “Saturday Night Special”; “Gimme Back My Bullets”; “That Smell”; “I Know A Little” and “Freebird”. The band quickly developed into one of the nation’s top touring draws with a grueling schedule of 300 shows a year.  During the next few years Lynyrd Skynyrd’s songs became radio staples. Their album, ‘Street Survivors’, had just been released to critical and popular acclaim. The ambitious new tour, just days underway, saw sellout crowds. On October 20, 1977, as the sun was setting in Mississippi, the chartered plane ran out of fuel and fell from the sky. [ artimus pyle . com ]

WASHINGTON (CNN) — President Barack Obama told a group of business leaders at the White House on Wednesday that the country “cannot afford inaction or delay” on the economy at a time when people “are looking to Washington for action — bold and swift.”

corner_wire_BL Obama says country cannot afford inaction on economy

Obama was seeking corporate America’s support for a proposed $825 billion stimulus package hours before a critical vote in the House of Representatives.

Obama said the federal government can “help create a favorable climate in which workers can prosper, businesses can thrive, and our economy can grow. And that is exactly what the recovery plan I’ve proposed is intended to do.”

“Most of the money we’re investing as part of this plan will get out the door immediately and go directly to job creation, generating or saving 3 to 4 million new jobs. And the vast majority of these jobs will be created in the private sector — because, as these CEOs well know, business, not government, is the engine of growth in this country,” he said.

The president also promoted the stimulus proposal earlier Wednesday at a meeting with a smaller group of corporate executives, including the heads of Google, JetBlue, Eastman Kodak, Motorola and Xerox.

    According to the press release:

“This decision to cease publication of the magazine and its website is driven entirely by the economy,” Mr. Townsend said. “Although readership and advertising response was encouraging in the early years, we have concluded that this economic market will not support our business expectations.”

Domino was launched in April 2005. The magazine’s current ratebase is 800,000.

I hear the website is going away too.

  • Author of ’Rabbit, Run,’ John Updike, Dies of Cancer

(Bloomberg) — John Updike, the Pulitzer Prize- winning author who chronicled middle-class life in small town and suburban America through the prism of such issues as sexuality, adultery, mortality and loss, died today. He was 76.

Updike died after a battle with lung cancer, according to an e-mail from his publisher, Alfred A. Knopf, a division of Random House.

A prolific writer, he authored more than 50 novels and volumes of short stories, poems, essays and criticism. Updike captured “the whole mass of middling, hidden, troubled America,” most notably in the four-book Rabbit series, which follows Everyman Harry “Rabbit” Angstrom through the second half of the 20th century. He won the Pulitzer Prize for two novels in the tetralogy: “Rabbit Is Rich” (1981) and “Rabbit at Rest” (1990).

Some critics, like John Cheever, considered Updike “the most brilliant and versatile writer of his generation.” He was called America’s greatest poetic novelist, who skillfully wove metaphor, lyricism and detail into his narratives. Others say that his prose is superficial and overly descriptive to hide the fact that his work is about nothing.

Many of his books centered on middle-class domestic life, including marriage, adultery and divorce. Updike often peppered these novels with graphic descriptions of sexual intercourse –to the point of gratuitousness, said some critics. Source: Bloomberg

  • Target announces corporate office layoffs

    The Truth 3:04 pm on January 27, 2009 | 0 Permalink | Reply
    Tags: , , , Home Depot, , , , Sprint Nextel, , Target Corporation, Texas Instruments,

Target released information just over an hour ago saying that they’re going lay off more people. In addition to those already laid off, the unfortunate employees of the big red dot are numbering in the tens of thousands. Although they did not release an exact number, it is assumed that these executions will be handed down from the corporate level and not within the stores.

“Like many other companies, Target is taking actions to manage payroll and non-payroll expense in the current economic environment,” Target said in a prepared statement. “We believe the decisions we are making, though difficult, represent appropriate actions to manage our business and maintain our competitive advantage going forward.”

Someone from target mentioned that more information would be made available later in the week.

Other companies in employment hell: Sprint Nextel, Caterpillar, Texas Instruments, and Pfizer. Nationwide, we’ve lost about 200,000 jobs so far this year.

The layoffs are the latest in a brutal round of job-cutting by large corporations. On Monday, about 50,000 new layoffs were announced at a variety of companies, including Home Depot, telecom giant Sprint Nextel, construction equipment manufacturer Caterpillar, semiconductor maker Texas Instruments and pharmaceutical company Pfizer. Already, 170,000 jobs have been lost nationwide in January.

    WAY TO GO AMERICA!
