  • James Moon Completes the Parish Walk

In the current unstable financial climate, Chris Moon, provides a shining example of inspiration to a wide range of businesses leaders and employees.
For his latest venture, Chris Moon walks the talk and is first amputee to complete the gruelling 85 mile time trial Clerical Medical Parish Walk Isle of Man.
The parish walk! … It sounds like the sort of thing one does for a few hours before having a cream tea in the village hall; but nothing could be further from the truth. It is a brutal eighty-five mile unforgiving road route around every parish of the Isle of Man, with many hills, which has to be completed in less than twenty four hours. Competitors are not allowed to run.
At 8.00 am on Saturday June 21st 2008 nearly fifteen hundred walkers set out on their longest day. Twenty four hours later, 121 successfully completed the race defying torrential rain and high winds. Chris Moon finished in a time of twenty-three hours twenty-one minutes and twenty-nine seconds and was awarded the Manx Telecom Parish Walk Outstanding Achievement Cup.
Chris Moon a former army officer lost his lower right arm and leg in 1995 whilst clearing landmines in Africa for a charity. He’s one of the few westerners to survive kidnap by Khmer Rouge guerrillas, been a speaker and trainer for eleven years and a veteran of many of the world’s toughest ultra marathons, raising funds for charities helping the disabled. He set up a small company MTB (Making The Best - his philosophy in life) which solves problems in the fields of human resources and security management. He is a well-known speaker on the subjects of change management, motivation, leadership and the concept of limitation. His widely acclaimed autobiography ‘One Step Beyond’ was published by Macmillan in 1999. He is involved with St Loyes (President), Disability Sport England (President), Honorary President of Organisation of Chartered Physiotherapists in Private Practice (OCPPP), The British Limbless Ex-Service Men’s Association, Motivation, Concern, Association to Aid Refugees, The Red Cross and is patron of COCO and Children’s Chance. He is an ambassador for the Prince’s Trust.
He first heard of the Parish Walk in 2000 when he spoke at the opening of the new airport at a charity event for the Red Cross. Daunted by the time cut off he vowed to return one day and successfully complete the Parish Walk to support an IOM charity (Crossroads for Carers IOM http://www.crossroadsiom.org)
Moon said, “This is probably the toughest event I have ever completed. What makes it a special challenge is that events of a similar distance, allow another five to 10 hours before cut off and competitors can run. I trained hard to increase my walking speed and stamina and would like to thank my prosthetist David Morrison from Glasgow for solving a technical problem at short notice. After 30 miles my stump continually swells and he created room for expansion. Thanks to my support crew who fed and watered me - I couldn’t have done it without you! It’s a tremendous testament to the character of the Isle of Man that they have this incredible challenge; thanks to the marshals and supporters who worked so hard and encouraged all the walkers.”
Chris Moon is a superb motivational speaker and much in demand for conferences, offering inspiration presentations to team building and corporate events. His general topics include: teamwork, overcoming adversity, goal setting, performance, health and safety, positive thinking, making the best of everything, diversity and leadership.
On the subject of diversity Chris has worked with large organisations speaking, presenting and facilitating on diversity issues.
With Health and Safety and Security, Chris has experience of working in high risk environments and a Masters in Security Management. He’s presented to large utility and oil companies on the mindsets around health and safety and security and makes what is sometimes thought to be a dry subject uplifting, humorous and relevant
UBS conference organiser, Julia Brewer, had this feedback on Chris’ recent presentations: “Chris went down a storm - they loved him!  Apparently he enjoyed himself too - the audiences were large 750 on the first day and 630 on the second and he had them in the palm of his hand throughout.  Client told me that he was the highlight of the conference and made up for all the tedious other presentations that the audience had to endure…..so very positive response”.

  • Don't Fight Skin Damage With More Chemicals - Check Your Labels & Use Natural Anti-aging Skincare Products Instead

    The Truth 2:11 am on March 15, 2010 | 0 Permalink | Reply
    Tags: Antiaging, , Chemicals, , , , , , , , , ,

Have the extremes of Summer or Winter weather taken a toll on your skin?   Most Anti-Aging product advertising focuses on the damaging effects of free radicals – typically caused by stress, pollution and severe weather conditions like sun or cold temperatures.  Yet if you were to carefully read the ingredients - especially the Active ingredients - in most Anti-Aging products, all they are offering are more chemicals to solve the problem. Even those products that claim to have Natural ingredients - if you read closely enough, you will see that the Natural ingredients are a very small percentage and usually listed in the Inactive Ingredients section which means they have no impact on the therapeutic value of the product.

I am amazed every day at the misrepresentation of ingredients in personal care and cosmetic products. Just this morning I was watching an ad for a new Anti-Aging product. The manufacturer of this product is a well-respected national brand that claims to be recommended by dermatologists and they probably are given the American medical communities affinity for chemical fixes.

What follows is an actual comparison of the Ingredients found in a nationally branded Anti-Aging Lotion product and PUR ESSENTIALS RENEWAL Plus 30 Daily Lotion. The information included in this comparison is taken directly from the web sites for both products. This comparison is not intended to demean the national brand product but rather to get our readers to be more careful about the products they use on their skin.

     National Brand Anti-Aging Day Lotion

This product claims to neutralize the damaging effects of free radicals on the skin and provide a sunscreen technology to protect the wearer from sun-induced DNA damage to the skin.  In addition to the trademarked sunscreen technology, the web site and advertising lists Feverfew, Soy and Vitamin E as important anti-oxidant and moisturizing components.

Active Ingredients: Avobenzone (1.8%), Homosalate (7%), Octisalate (4%), Octocrylene (1.5%), Oxybenzone (2%) [Note:  These are all sunscreen ingredients - so essentially you are purchasing a sunscreen that also moisturizes]

Inactive Ingredients: Water, Glycerin, Soybean Seed Extract (Glycine Soja), C12-15 Alkyl Benzoate, Dimethicone, Diethylhexyl 2,6 Naphthalate, Phenyl Trimethicone, Cetearyl Alcohol, Cetearyl Glucoside, Benzyl Alcohol, Feverfew Extract (Chrysantemum Parthenium), Silica, Tocopherol, Dipotassium Glycyrrhizate, Ethylene Acrylic Acid Copolymer, Steareth-2, Steareth-21, Titanium Dioxide, Mica, Polymethyl Methacrylate, 1,2 Hexanediol, Caprylyl Glycol, Methylisothiazolinone, Polysorbate 20, Acrylamide/Ammonium Acrylate Copolymer, Polyisobutene, Acrylates C10-30 Alkyl Acrylate Crosspolymer, Aluminum Starch Octenyl Succinate, Arachidyl Alcohol, Behenyl Alcohol, Arachidyl Glucoside, Methylparaben, Propylparaben, Triethanolamine, Fragrance [There is Soy and Feverfew as well as Tocopherol - the Vitamin E component - listed here in the Inactive Ingredients section. Water and glycerin are the primary Inactive Ingredients and the rest is chemical including the fragrance.]   So although the advertising lists the Soy, Feverfew and Vitamin E as important Natural ingredients in this product, they are in fact listed in the Inactive Ingredients in an extremely low % of total volume.  This product typically costs $14.99-$17.99 for 1.7 oz.

PUR ESSENTIALS RENEWAL Plus 30 Daily Lotion

RENEWAL Plus 30 is an All Natural, 90 % Organic Product that is packed with proven anti-oxidants and made safe with a unique, synergistic all natural preservative system.  Organic Rooibos Tea Extract is the most powerful player in this anti-oxidant team. Recently Japanese scientists discovered that Rooibos Tea contains a mimic of the enzyme Super Oxide Dismutase (S.O.D.) which is an antioxidant that attacks the free radicals and limits their damaging effects on the skin. We will let the Ingredients list speak for itself:

Ingredients: Aloe barbadensis (Organic Aloe Vera) Juice, Cocos nucifera (Organic Coconut) Oil, Aspalathus linearis (Organic Rooibos Tea) Extract, Olea europaea (Organic Olive) Oil, Emulsifying Wax NF, Kosher Vegetable Glycerin, Palm Stearic Acid, Hamamelis virginiana (Witch Hazel), Camellia sinensis (Organic Green Tea) Extract, Urtica dioica (Organic Nettle Leaf) Extract, Stellaria media (Organic Chickweed) Extract, Ulmus fulva (Organic Slippery Elm) Extract, Silybum marianum (Organic Milk Thistle) Extract, Althea officinalis (Organic Marshmallow Root) Extract, Avena sativa (Organic Oatstraw) Extract, Aphanizomenon flos-aqua (Organic Blue Green Algae), Tocopherol (Vitamin E), Xanthan Gum (Polysaccharide gum), Salix nigra (Black Willowbark) Extract, Rosmarinus officinalis (Rosemary) Oleoresin, Azadirachta indica (Neem) Oil

In addition there is a powerful blend of anti-aging pure essential oils:   Essential Oils and Absolutes of Neroli, Rose, Jasmine, Geranium, Sandalwood, Roman Chamomile, German Chamomile, Sweet Fennel, Carrot Seed, Lemon, Lavender, Frankincense.  Neroli and Lavender Oil naturally regenerates skin cells and tones mature skin; Jasmine & Rose Absolutes soothe dry, sensitive skin; Fennel Oil brings dull skin back to life; Chamomile Oil counteracts puffiness; while Carrot Seed Oil acts as a natural toner.  There are absolutely no chemical preservatives, artificial color or artificial fragrance.  PUR ESSENTIALS RENEWAL Plus 30 Daily Lotion is $42.00 for 4 oz. While you may be paying a couple of dollars more than the national brand product (which would cost approximately $38.00 for 4 oz.), when you consider the quality of the ingredients, there is no comparison.

Mostly, we just want you to be more aware of the products you use on your skin and how a little information used in advertising can be misleading. Remember - check your labels.   Not just the big label on the front of the product which can easily say “Natural”, but take the time to read the fine print on the back of the label; remembering that ingredients are listed in the order of % of content.  Think about it this way - whatever you put ON your skin, you are in essence putting IN your body.
