We all have the need to find software that is actually useful occasionally, even more so when we are operating in a linux environment.

- Get torrents at full speed, increase ping and more without having to set up custom iptables.
dtach - “screen” without the steroids.
AllTray - Dock any program to the system tray.
Avant - Program dock similar to the OSX dock.
Deluge Torrent - Upcoming bittorrent client, supports additional features like DHT, written in C++.
wicd - Pronounced wicked, wireless network manager, very intuitive. Similar to the windows Zero Conf Wireless system.
Synergy - Share mouse and keyboard across multiple computers (like a KVM switch, but works via software instead).
Scapy - Scapy is a powerful interactive packet manipulation tool, packet generator, network scanner, network discovery, packet sniffer, etc.
Yakuake - 1 button quake style drop down terminal window.
Katapult - Katapult is an application for KDE, written in C++, designed to allow faster access to applications, bookmarks, and other items. It is plugin-based, so it can launch anything that is has a plugin for. It was inspired by Quicksilver for OS X.
Asterisk - Open source IP based PBX telephony system. Very powerful.
Polipo - Small and fast caching web proxy.
lsof - Lsof is a Unix-specific diagnostic tool. Its name stands for LiSt Open Files, and it does just that. It lists information about any files that are open by processes currently running on the system. It can also list communications open by each process.
PKGsrc - Centralized package management system for Unix-like operating systems.
xPDF - Open source viewer for Portable Document Format (PDF) files. A good alternative to Adobes software.
xCHM - xCHM is a cross-platform GUI front-end to chmlib.
Links - Text-based browser with support for HTML tables and frames.
Scailx - A complete replacement for Exchange Server, with connectors for Outlook.
tiger - Security tool that can be use both as a security audit and intrusion detection system.
tcpdump - Common computer network debugging tool that runs under the command line.
nagios - A host and service monitor designed to inform you of network problems before your clients, end-users or managers do.
cacti - Complete frontend to RRDTool, it stores all of the necessary information to create graphs and populate them with data in a MySQL database. The frontend is completely PHP driven.
fail2ban - Scans log files like /var/log/pwdfail or /var/log/apache/error_log and bans IP that makes too many password failures. It updates firewall rules to reject the IP address.
monit - Utility for managing and monitoring, processes, files, directories and devices on a UNIX system.
fdupes - Program for identifying or deleting duplicate files residing within specified directories.
