    Are your precious photos safe?

Are you backing up your precious photos? our computers and removable storage media are full with experiences and precious moments. However electronic media is not safe. Hard disks crash and removable media fails.

Disasters can happen. Digital photo albums are vulnerable and if not backed up you lose thousands of photos and a lifetime of moments in just one hard disk crash.

What are backups? backups are just copies of our files that are put in a safe place. Example of such copies can be photos put on a DVD and placed at a friend’s house. The DVD could of course be placed in your own house but that would be less safe since in case of a disaster in your house you might lose both your computer and the backups.

A few years ago backups were hard to make. You practically had to be a computer guru to figure our those backup software. Today however backup was made easy using a number of software solution and online service. Below you can find two main options for backing up your photo albums: burning them to a DVD/CD or using an online backup service.

    Backing up to a DVD/CD

Backing up to a DVD/CD is done by using a DVD/CD writer drive and software that can burn files on such media. Usually using such solutions requires more technical know-how. Backing up to a DVD/CD is a cheap solution. You can buy such writer drives and software for probably under a $100 and each DVD/CD media should cost in the cents. One such software that has been around for a while and used by many is from Roxio.

When backing up your photo albums to a DVD/CD please make sure that you put the DVD/CD in a safe place a good option would be somewhere out of your home maybe a family member, a neighbor you can trust or a friend. Another thing to remember with DVD/CD backup is that when you take new photos you should remember to refresh your backups. Ususally unless your photo album is very big the easiest way to do that is just to burn again you complete collection.

Backing up to an online backup service

As any other service backup found its way to the Internet too. A number of sites provide backup services today for everything from digital photo albums to your word documents. Those services usually charge a monthly fee in the $10 to $20 but some provide a more limited service for free. The idea behind the service is simple: instead of backing up to a DVD/CD you just upload your photos to a site and create copy there. The site stores the backups for you in a safe place far away from your computer. If a disaster happens and you need your files you can simple download them back from the site or ask them to send you a DVD/CD with the files (not all provide the latter option). A broadband connection is needed in order to use this option.

There are many advantages to using an online backup service. First they are usually very easy to use. Some provide software that you download and install on your computer. You then point to the folder where your photos reside and the software takes it from there. It will make sure new files are uploaded to the backup service and that your backup is always fresh.

Examples of sites that provide such service are: Streamload that starts with a basic FREE 10GB space (approx 10,000 photos at 2 megapixels) and Xdrive that starts from 5GB for $10 a month.

  • Disney Netpal Laptop: Fun And Safe For Children

The Disney Netpal is going to be a great holiday gift for children ages 6-12 this year. It’s made by Asus, one of the best makers of computers and netbooks. And it’s not a play computer. It’s a fully operational netbook with 8.9″ screen. The tech specs for the Disney Netpal is the same as most standard netbooks. Specifically, it has 1.6 GHz Atom Intel Processor, 160 GB HD drive, 1 GB RAM memory, wireless access, and Windows XP.

Children will truly enjoy the Disney Netpal. It comes in two colors, Princess Pink and Magic Blue. It’s desktop can be set up with choices of up to 10 design themes centered around popular Disney characters. The themes, which are made only for the Disney Netpal, include Cars, Disney Fairies, Vintage Mickey Mouse, WALL-E, Hannah Montana, and many others.

There are programs that come with the Disney Netpal by Asus that will entertain kids for hours. The Disney Mix is a music software that lets children make their own playlist. The older kids will really enjoy the Disney Mix especially if they’re fans of Hannah Montana and the Jonas Brothers.

The Disney Pix is another software that comes with the Disney Netpal. It teaches kids how to edit digital images while having fun. For example, kids will be able to paste in their faces on other characters and create their own movie scene. They can make other type of scenes as their creative minds allow. Additionally, they can share their creative works as videos or as postcards. If a child is creative and imaginative enough, he or she can have a portfolio at a very early age.

Since the Disney Netpal is designed for use by kids, Asus and Disney made sure that a few considerations are covered. After all, kids are kids and delicate electronic devices are not typically safe with them as main users. For example, kids spill a lot. And we know that spills and splashes, not necessarily from children, have broken laptops and computers before. Hence, the Disney Netpal comes standard with a spill-proof keyboard.

Kids also drop things often. Some of them throw things when they’re excited. Well, I’m not sure how strong the Disney Netpal is, but it comes with reinforcement to avoid (maybe mitigate is the right word) impact loss. In fact, it has a ShockShield Data Protection system that help guard from data loss caused by the netbook getting hit too hard or getting dropped.

As mentioned earlier, the Disney Netpal is a full blown netbook. Meaning that kids can use it to go online and do things over the web. And with that, there are spreading issues over safety in web activities. The Disney Netpal has mechanism letting parents configure what content their kids can see or which software their kids can work with. The parents are also able to set up when and how long the Disney Netpal can be used by their kids. And finally, parents are able to create a list that their children can send and receive emails.

The Disney Netpal is looking quite like the right gift for the right child. It’s not a toy, but a fun early learning device with safety features that could help in stirring a young creative mind.

One of the most popular car accessories, the Sat Nav devices, help you travel without missing your directions. These devices guide the travelers with great features like turn-by-turn voice directions, with highlighting various important points like ATM’s, hotels, hospitals etc. These devices are a great help when one is traveling to an unknown location with great comfort.

These devices use the GPS (geo spatial system) system to locate directions and guide you while you travel. The satellite navigation receivers combine signals from various satellites and use techniques like Kalman filtering to filter dynamic data into a single estimated value for determining velocity, time and position. The sat nav systems use small electronic receivers to determine the location within few meters by using time signals from satellites.

Several well known brands like Garmin, Road angel, Tom-tom and Navman etc. have ventured with the latest sat nav devices with highly interactive menus, safety camera locations and large touch screens. The systems are robust and can be operated directly into the cars.

One just needs to decide one’s destination and the device will guide you which direction to take turn by turn using speech and screen directions. In case you miss a turn, the system can recalculate the alternative route and guide you. And you’ll never get stuck in the jam with help of a real time traffic feed.

  • Keep Your Memories Safe With This Incredible Service!

If you are anything like me and my family, your memories are very precious, and you would like to keep them as safe as you possibly can. Chances are if you own film reels, VHS tapes, or tapes, you know that these items can become less and less reliable over time! They deteriorate, you can easily lose them, and you can even throw them out accidentally (which has personally happened to me). So how would you like to keep your memories safe and continue to keep them safe for years and years to come?

Well now you can! There are business online that specialize in transferring your old movies over to DVDs and as we all know DVDs are very reliable! The actual process doesn’t damage your film, or tapes in any way shape or form. Of course it depend on which site you use, but I found a few online recently that had superb quality and customer service. Some of these sites will even let you “sample” their service? Yep it’s true! They will actually allow you to transfer X amount of feet to DVD for absolutely free, just so you can personally see how dedicated and experienced they really are!

Some of these businesses take the time to process, inspect, repair, clean and lubricate every foot of film by hand! You would be stunned by the quality of some of the older vintage 8mm/16mm or Super8mm films that we have restored. The quality is unbelievable, and really, isn’t that the most important thing? A little side tip; do yourself a HUGE favor and try this site out; Transfer Your Movies. This is the one I tried and I have been nothing but happy with their service and quality of service! This site not only has awesome service but the prices are fair and the turn around time is quick! They charge 10cents per X amount of feet for film to DVD transfer, and 15cents per foot for complete digital restoration! This site is definitely worth it! If you want to you can also find review on sites such as Google by searching for the “category” or business name and see what other people say about it as well!

I have personally tried services such as these, and I know of a few people in my family that have had it done, and really its worth the few bucks it costs to transfer over. I can’t even begin to explain how much happier I am with these DVDs than I was with those old film reels! This is just one of those things you have to try to believe it! Take it from me, you really won’t be disappointed!

  • Keeping Your Kids Safe With GPS

It’s every parent’s nightmare: your child is not answering their cell phone and they have not returned home as scheduled. You call their friends but they don’t where they are either. Frantically, you call the police in an effort to track them down, when all of a sudden your call waiting kicks in. It is your child, who decided to go the movies without telling you first. They are safe and sound, but your heart won’t stop beating fast.

This situation could have been easily averted if the parent had been able to track their child’s whereabouts using GPS technology.

There are two primary ways to track where your child is using GPS: in their car or on their cell phone.

    · GPS in the car. Many new cars now come standard with GPS devices, but if you want to add a GPS to an existing car, the cost is lower than it has ever been. Garmin, Tom Tom and other consumer GPS companies now offer basic products that only cost between $200 - $300 and fit seamlessly into any automobile.

    · GPS in the cell phone. One of the most effective ways to track the whereabouts of your child using GPS is through a cell phone. The latest smart phones from Palm and Blackberry are now coming equipped with the technology and can be purchased for a couple of hundreds of dollars (or may even be free with an upgrade or extension of your cell phone calling plan).

Both these methods are extremely affordable, given the peace-of-mind that they provide the parents of kids who are driving age or older.

    How it Works

Once the GPS device is activated, it can be tracked on any PC with an Internet connection. It is important to tell your child to keep the device in the on position at all times (especially on a cell phone) so that you can determine their location if need be.

    Don’t be secretive

If your child discovers that you tried to sneak a GPS device into their car without their knowledge, it can create trust issues that may be difficult to repair. A better idea is to tell them upfront about your intentions and the reasons why you are doing it.

It is important to tell the child that you are not using a GPS device because you don’t trust them, but rather because you are concerned about their safety. Emphasize that will only check the GPS in the case of an emergency or if you are unable to reach them by cell phone.

If handled correctly, this will make the teenager feel loved rather than mistrusted.

    More Tips

    · Cell phone GPS functionality tends to drain the phone’s battery. Be sure your teenager’s phone is always properly charged when the leave the house.

    · Don’t panic. If you can’t find a signal from your child’s GPS device, it may that they are driving through a “dead spot” where service is not available.
