  • Aljazeera Sport - great value also if you do not know Arabic

A friend originating in the Middle East recently told me about the Aljazeera Sport pay TV satellite channels. There are great value - street price in a country where the package is sold officially is about 70 USD per year. Yes, that is correct…, it is about the same amount that viewers in Southern Europe pays per month for similar packages.

The channels are broadcasted over Hotbird and Nilesat. The name of the provider/channel seems rather mixed up. Sometime the Provider (as seen from your satellite box) is called”Aljazeera” and sometimes it is called “JSC”.

JSC seems to be an abbreviation for Jazeera Satellite Channels. Jazeera is Arabic and means ‘peninsula’ - hinting at the Arabian peninsula…, but that was not what this article is about.

Apart from two “free to air channels”, called “1″ and “2″, there are currently (January 2010) almost a dosin channels in the pay package, those being “+1″, “+2″, … to “+10″ and also one HD channel, called “HD1″. THe HD1 channel is transmitting in 1080i quality.

In addition, JSC are also transmitting test picture for additional channels “HD2″, “Club”, etc, so there seems to be more in the pipeline.

So, what is in it for all us that do not speak Arabic?

First of all, there is one channel “+3″ that is somewhat focused on English speakers. For example, in between football matches the studio talk is done in English with really great guests, like Frank Rijkaard, Arsene Venger, Terry Venables, etc, etc. Also, practically all European football matches are broadcasted with commentary in both Arabic and English, so that you can select language from your remote control.

The content of the channels are mainly focused on football (soccer), but there is also some NBA basketball and tennis. I more detailed list is being kept at Wikipedia.

The football covered is basically everything, except the English Premier League, which is broadcasted in the Middle East by Showtime (a competitor). However, one can only hope that when that is auctioned again in the summer of 2010, JSC will put in a good bid…

Still, even the current content will keep most football fans pretty busy. You will have the matches of Real Madrid, Barcelona, Inter, etc, etc, broadcasted live, often in HD, every weekend. Also, te UEFA Champions League is there for the middle of the week, European Championships, World Cup, …

Now, for the English speaker it quite difficult to keep and among all those channels - particularly since the EPG (electronic program guide) content broadcasted over the satellite often seem to be out of sync with the actual programs show. However, there is now a website available JSC SPORT GUIDE that show the program listings also in English. This site will give you a good idea of if you should be canceling your old pay tv package and move to Aljazeera Sport, or not…

The channels are encrypted in Irdeto and Viaccess, on both Hotbird and Nilesat, but it seems most new cards being sold are Irdeto. Unless you live in the Middle East - or have a friend who do - these cards are also sold by variour resellers on the Internet…

All in all, Aljazeera Sport is a great value for all sports fans - also those who do not speak Arabic.

The sports world every year has events that make people across the globe sit down to watch. It takes special years to overcome the biggest each year. In 2010 we will have one of those special events that will get more attention than all. This will be the 2010 Winter Olympic Games.

The host city of the games in 2010 will be Vancouver which is located in British Columbia. No other event in the world has more participants than the Olympics. This brings out the competitive spirit out in all countries around the world. This will be the first time since 1988 that the Canada has had the Olympics.

If the Olympics are not enough for one year the FIFA World Cup will be held in South Africa in 2010. While the Olympics bring out the world’s best the World Cup is as intense as any event. Qualifying for the World Cup is an ever going process for some countries. Many countries just to make it can be a task like no other. No matter if you call it soccer or football the game is the world’s favorite. This leads billions to watch each time the World Cup comes around. Will the usual powers remain supreme or is a dark horse ready to come to the forefront in 2010? Only time will tell.

In 2010 we will see Tiger Woods and his mission to tie Jack Nicholas for most majors ever one. This makes each major more special than many years. Throughout 2010 calendar the golf eyes of the world will focus on the Masters, British Open, US Open and the PGA Championship.

We will also see another Super Bowl and football National Championship to kick of 2010 to get us started for a great year in sports. Events such as Opening Day will also pass to keep the sports world alive and well.

Many years are headlined by yearly events. These events are wonderful each year to keep us coming back. The year of 2010 with the Winter Olympics and FIFA World Cup will stand up from the back. Get your popcorn ready it is going to be a heck of a year.

  • Senior Pilots Drawn to Light Sport Aircraft

A good friend returned from EAA’s 2007 Airventure Oshkosh Airshow holding delivery position #426 on a new Cessna Model 162 Skycatcher. I’d been trying to track down a C162 buyer for a while, so this is great timing as I want to find out what is drawing current, licensed private pilots to the Skycatcher. What I found did not really surprise me.

At 78.5 years young, Fresno pilot John Pugliese has amassed 7,000 hours in a pilot career that has included ownership of a Fairchild PT-23, a Cessna 120 and his current bird, a 1952 Cessna 170. After a heart attack in the early ’90s, Pugliese must now undergo additional scrutiny each time he is re-issued a third-class medical card. And while he has good health today to flies with an FAA medical card, he knows that may not be the case forever. “I’m hoping that Cessna can deliver my Skycatcher before the day comes when the medical card cannot be re-issued.”

I’m certain Pugliese is not the only “senior” private pilot who is looking at Light Sport aircraft as a sort of “workaround” to current FAA medical rules. And as a refresher, let me pass along what the FAA says about the subject of Sport Pilot medicals.

Sport Pilot licensing rules require either a third-class FAA medical certificate or a current and valid U.S. driver’s license as evidence of medical eligibility (provided the individual’s most recent application for an FAA medical certificate was not denied, revoked, suspended or withdrawn). So as long as a pilot can move into an LSA before he/she is denied, all is well and good. However, once FAA takes that card away, those denied pilots cannot use a driver’s license in lieu of the medical card.

As an experienced aviator, Pugliese picked the Skycatcher for a number of reasons. “The main thing was the hydraulic brakes” he said. “I’m an old taildragger driver from way back, and sometimes you have to almost lock up one wheel to keep things straight. And nothing against Rotax, but I like that Cessna is putting Continentals in the Skycatcher, since it will be easy to find service coast-to-coast on that engine. I also like that I will be able to get parts through an established Cessna dealer network. And at just over five feet tall, I’m happy the Skycatcher’s rudder pedals are adjustable. The plane fits me fine, and is really a great looking airplane!”

As a successful businessman, Pugliese knows that the $109,000 base price will climb before delivery day. A clause in the Cessna contract allows for cost of living increases and with California sales tax that he says is a staggering nine percent, John expects the Skycatcher to come in at around $140,000 without wheel pants or a ballistic chute. He expects that by the time Cessna delivers the 162, the Garmin G300 panel will change for the better, as avionics always do.

Bottom line: John Pugliese is one of those older pilots we all love…nice as can be, true to his fellow pilots, and always willing to take a young kid flying to spark their internal fires. When he gets the Skycatcher, it’ll make a perfect platform to serve his mission profile, which is to poke holes in the sky while converting fossilized dinosaurs into altitude to chase down the elusive airport hamburger.

Restate in vasca 15 minuti.

  • The Thrill Of Snowboarding For Those Who Are Unfamiliar With The Sport

    The Truth 10:16 am on March 5, 2010 | 0 Permalink | Reply
    Tags: , Sport, , , Unfamiliar

Even though people didn’t really get the concept of snowboarding until the 1970s it didn’t really become part of the winter Olympics nor popular until 1998. Today this is the sport that everyone is waiting for when watching the winter Olympics.

So due to many people snowboarding and many people wanting to learn many resorts offer rentals and free lessons on most of their slopes. They would want you to learn from someone who can teach rather than just renting you a board and having you go bust your rear on the hard ice.

Many people say that you should learn how to ski before you snowboard this however is not true I have a friend that a few years back had just started surfing in the earlier months like September through December and in January went snowboarding in Colorado and got pictures of him doing airs and rails. So snowboarding shouldn’t and can’t be that hard if he can just go for 2 weeks and get good at the sport. He wasn’t even that good on a surfboard and he did better on a snowboard it looked then a surfboard and on top of all that he even bought a snowboard. That’s how easy and fun he said it was.

A lot of the resorts often host contest for snowboarding so if you are there and have been snowboarding before you can enter to win.

Also there are many big companies that come to these events when being hosted so it may be your shot to get a sponsor or two while boarding in some of these events. You never know if you do well enough you may become a sponsored rider. Just go out and try your best and make the best of what you have.

Today you can even have your snowboard custom made unlike back in the day you had one type of board that you could ride. Not today, today you can custom make a board to the size and figure that you want it and even have it painted the way you want. All you do is go to a shaper or maker and have it made.

One of the problems with snowboarding just like any other sport is injuries. You will need to wear a helmet when snowboarding so that you don’t crack your noggin. So when you go to the icy slopes or wherever it is that you may go you need to wear protection so you don’t become injured on your trip seeing as that can cause a short trip. So go out today and start riding who knows you might be better at snowboarding then the sport you already do or compete in. it is easy or everyone is the northern states wouldn’t be doing it. So go get you a snowboard and start trying to ride before you get to an age to wear you cannot even get out of the house.
